2026 ADA Standards Are Here
In 2024, the DOJ and HHS adopted new Medical Diagnostic Equipment (MDE) standards issued by the US Access Board. As a result, exam tables at facilities receiving federal or state funding must now meet minimum height requirements to ensure accessibility for all patients. The deadline for compliance is coming soon.

2026 ADA standards: your questions answered
Frequently asked questions
What are the new standards for Exam Table seat height?
The DOJ and HHS now require exam tables in publicly funded facilities to provide a low transfer height of 17-19 inches.
How many Exam Tables need to comply?
Facilities must have at least one accessible table, and typically 10–20% of their total equipment must meet ADA standards, depending on the facility type.
Who enforces these new standards?
While the Access Board sets the technical standards, they do not enforce them. Enforcement is handled by:
- DOJ: For state and local entities under the Americans with Disabilities Act
- HHS: For federally funded providers under the Rehabilitation Act
What are the compliance deadlines?
- July 8, 2026: HHS deadline for federally funded facilities
- August 9, 2026: DOJ deadline for state and local facilities
Do Brewer Power Tables meet these standards?
Yes. Our Access® PLUS and FLEX™ PLUS High-Low tables feature a 17" minimum height and meet all other requirements for ADA compliance.
