Crazy Stunt Promoted by E.F. BREWER CO.

With the introduction of the Brewer Cycle, a lawnmower attachment that turned reel-type push lawn mowers into riding lawnmowers, Brewer made a splash with its 1956 media stunt.

TV fans in the Milwaukee and Chicago area recently viewed with amusement what may have been considered a “crazy stunt”. Other homeowners with larger lawns to mow were probably more seriously interested in the spectacle of a small power lawn mower being driven a distance of 98 miles from Milwaukee to Navy Pier in Chicago.

The mower itself was a “Motor-Mower”, manufactured in Richmond, Indiana. It pushed off at Noon October 12, from the downtown Milwaukee Headquarters of a Milwaukee distributer…. John Pritzlaff Hardware Co. The 22” power mower had been converted from a “walking” to a “riding” model by detaching the handle and then attaching a “Brewer Cycle”.

The Brewer cycle is a lawn mower accessory manufactured by the E.F. Brewer company of Butler, Wisconsin, and placed on the market this Spring for the first time. It may be used either with new equipment or to convert equipment already in use from walking to riding models. Successful completion of the 98 mile trip not only demonstrated the staying powers of the lawn mower involved but also proved conclusively that the Brewer Cycle accessory works as efficiently as claimed with a small size power mower.

Statistics for the trip are as follow: distance 98 miles; 27 hours of actual riding time; on U.S. Highway 32; twenty miles to the gallon reported; arrival in Chicago at Michigan Blvd. and Ohio St. at 10 A.M. October 15th. The unit was then driven from this arrival point to Navy Pier for the 11 A.M. opening of the Hardware Trade Show on Monday morning. For the first few blocks of the trip, the rider was Milton McQuire, President of the Milwaukee Common Council. For most of the trip the rider was Norm Larson, Brewer Company employee.

Seems like Frank Brewer and his staff had in mind some of the ideas used to promote Frontier Days when they planned this trip to Chicago. Milwaukee and Chicago radio and TV stations as well as local papers gave this promotion quite a play.
